What Sam Presti's statement reveals about Cason Wallace's future with the Thunder

Cason Wallace is set to get a big improvement in his role for the Oklahoma City Thunder in the 2026-27 season. With Lu Dort's departure, Wallace is the top perimeter defender on the roster, which is a role that he seems to welcome.

Offensively, Wallace also has tremendous potential to become one of the most efficient players for the Thunder. Playing alongside Shai Gilgeous-Alexander will be a big boost for his value, and that could secure him the long-term contract he wants.

Sam Presti hints at Cason Wallace's long-term future with OKC

As one of the most talented guards on the OKC roster, Wallace is seen as a top stopper. He is also a decent offensive player, especially since he won't get too many touches due to Gilgeous-Alexander, Jalen Williams, and Chet Holmgren being seen as the top options.

However, Wallace is quite efficient, especially with his spot-up three-point shooting. That is a big deal because most teams would be more focused on stopping the big three.

The starting spot is open for Wallace, but he will also face some stiff competition from Ajay Mitchell, who has also broken out for the Thunder. However, Mitchell might be more suited to a spark plug role alongside Jared McCain off the bench. 

With Wallace's role, he will probably also get an uptick with his next contract. Now that the pathway has opened up for him, it seems general manager Sam Presti is making some hints about Wallace's future.

"I would just say Cason is someone we think very highly of and has done a great job for us. I think the greatest sign of respect we could've shown Cason is moving Lu (Dort) in that trade. It's a bit of a gesture to him to say we think you can have a great role on this team," Presti said in a presser ahead of the 2026-27 season.

It is up to the Thunder to find the right agreement and contract with Wallace. He will be a valuable asset for years to come, especially since he is a natural fit with all of the Thunder's star players.
