What Jim Schwartz's resignation from Browns means for Myles Garrett

The Cleveland Browns might've made a big mistake, as their decision to hire Todd Monken as head coach has left Jim Schwartz very upset.

As Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports, Schwartz has resigned as the Browns' defensive coordinator, leaving the team after just three years.

While it's a big loss for the Browns, what does Schwartz's resignation mean for superstar pass rusher Myles Garrett? Well, the Browns pass rusher was hoping Schwartz wouldn't leave, so now it's an awkward situation for Garrett and the Browns.

What Jim Schwartz's resignation means for Myles Garrett

When it was revealed that Schwartz was threatening to leave Cleveland, Garrett posted a meme to his Instagram story (which Ari Meirov of The 33rd Team shared on Twitter/x) that depicted a woman slouched over in exhaustion, and/or being upset.

Garrett's posting made his feelings clear: he is not a fan of Schwartz leaving the Browns. While he might not like the current situation, with Schwartz leaving, there's not much he can do.

Would Garrett force a trade? It's unlikely after just last offseason signing his massive $160 million extension with the Browns.

Trading Garrett now would cost the Browns a ridiculous amount of money, and doing so right after he broke the single-season NFL sack record with 23 sacks during the 2025 NFL season would make the fanbase irate.

Even if Garrett wants a trade now that Schwartz is not the defensive coordinator, the Browns have no reason to make such a deal.

The 30-year-old pass rusher wouldn't be able to follow Schwartz this offseason anyway, as he's not expected to take a coaching job for the 2026 season.

Garrett is most likely going to play the 2026 season in Cleveland. While Garrett might be frustrated at Schwartz leaving, as indicated by his post from the initial report on Schwartz, he's not likely to go anywhere.

Browns fans shouldn't worry about anything with Garrett this offseason. Not only would a trade be hard to swing from a monetary perspective, but the Browns surely would have zero intention to trade Garrett after his 2025 season.

Garrett may be frustrated with Schwartz's departure, but he isn't going to go anywhere and will continue producing for the Browns defense in 2026 under a new defensive coordinator.
