Stephen Curry got the better of his Splash Brother in the first matchup between the two former teammates. The Golden State Warriors beat the Dallas Mavericks in Klay Thompson's return to the Bay, and Curry hit the dagger shot with 27 seconds left on the clock.
The Mavericks called a timeout, and Curry was shown running down the court with excitement, doing his now iconic "Night Night" celebration. Curry yelled into the baseline TNT broadcast camera with pure, raw emotion. What Curry said is still up for debate.
Some suggest he said, "You miss it here," in response to Thompson's decision to join the Mavericks; others suggest he said, "If you want to win, you stay here."
One NBA X account posted leaked audio that appears to show Curry saying, "You better stay here."
The win gave the Warriors a 1-0 record in NBA Cup play. After the game, the two-time MVP was asked about what he was yelling into the camera, and Curry himself did not have an answer.
"I really have no idea. I gotta go look at it myself. In that type of moment, with all that angst, it was raw emotion. I really don't know what I said. I will let you know, though I don't shy away from what I say on the court; I have to go look at it again," said Curry.
Maybe he will stay true to his word and give an update on what was said, but for now, fans are left to perform their best lip reading and wonder.
Curry finished the night with 37 points and nine assists, while Thompson also had a solid showing in his return with 22 points on 6-12 shooting from three. There will be more to come between the Splash Brothers, but after one game, Curry has the upper hand in their head-to-head matchups.
Thompson was given a warm welcome back with a tribute video and was showered with love from the fans that he won four championships in front of.
