The Detroit Tigers can only hope returning home Friday will shake off one of the ugliest stretches of play MLB has seen this year as they welcome the Toronto Blue Jays to open a weekend series.

The Tigers have dropped three consecutive series in what figured to be one of the softest parts of their schedule, getting swept at home by the Red Sox and losing road series to the Royals and Mets (in another sweep). Despite that showing against the Sox last week, Detroit still has the third-best home record in the AL at 12-6, while sitting dead last in MLB in road games (7-19).

The Jays have also struggled away from home (6-13) but at least have the comfort of Trey Yesavage taking the ball Friday. His three starts so far have been brief (13.1 innings total) but largely brilliant, as he has allowed just one run while striking out 15.

Starting pitching has suddenly become the main cause for concern in Detroit, with Tarik Skubal joining Casey Mize and Justin Verlander on the injured list. A.J. Hinch has tried to piece it together with masking tape and bullpen games, but even when the Tigers get a quality start — as they did from Framber Valdez Wednesday in New York — their hitters or relievers tend to let them down.

It's still just mid-May, though, so plenty of time remains for both teams to move back above .500. Who will begin the weekend with a win? Here's everything you need to know to watch the series opener.
