There might not be a hotter player in the NBA than Cade Cunningham right now, and suddenly the idea of fifth-year All-Star garnering some MVP buzz isn't so far-fetched.
As nice as the award would be for the Pistons' star, Cunningham and Detroit have much bigger goals. The Pistons have a strong grip on the No. 1 seed in the East as the calendar prepares to shift to March, and the path to the NBA Finals certainly seems to be wide open in the conference.
The Cavaliers signaled when they traded for James Harden that they believe the path is indeed wide open. Cleveland won Harden's first five games in uniform and has a legitimate chance to make a run at the No. 2 seed in the East as the franchise looks to position itself as a serious championship contender.
The Pistons and Cavaliers meet for the first of two times in a span of five days on Friday, as the two will face off again in Cleveland on Tuesday. A sweep for Detroit could make the No. 1 seed all but a formality, while a sweep for the Cavaliers would be quite a statement about their viability as contenders.
