Victor Wembanyama led the San Antonio Spurs to a 130-110 home win over the OKC Thunder. After the game he took a shot at Thunder center Chet Holmgren, emphatically shutting down talks of a rivalry between the two.

“No, I don’t think about that,” Wembanyama said when asked by Maxime Aubin in French. “At least from a basketball standpoint, there’s no comparison.”

@MaximeAubin1 Yep. No comparison.

@MaximeAubin1 But why do people continue to ask Wemby (face of his franchise) how he compares against OKC’s third option? His answer basically says the same thing.

@Fullcourtpass @MaximeAubin1 That confidence hits different when your game keeps backing it up.

@Fullcourtpass @MaximeAubin1 Bro called him a bum in a respectful manner

@Fullcourtpass @MaximeAubin1 Bro doesn't even regard Chet's talent 😂 I don't think Wemby is a President Lincoln fan.

Victor Wembanyama and Chet Holmgren have been paired against each other due to their similar physical appearance and playing style. Both players are ultra-skilled, 7-foot-plus big men with shooting range, defensive versatility and ball-handling.

The Frenchman was the first pick in 2023. He won the 2024 Rookie of the Year award, while Holmgren, who was drafted second in 2022, missed his entire rookie season due to injury and had to contend with Wemby for the position of the best rookie upon his return.

This season, Victor Wembanyama has been the better player statistically. He is averaging 23.7 points, 11.8 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 3.1 blocks. Additionally, he is shooting 51% from the field and 36% from the 3-point line.

Chet Holmgren, on the other hand, is averaging 18.2 PPG, 7.6 RPG, 1.6 APG and 1.4 BPG, while shooting 56% from the field and 39% from beyond the arc.

Chet Holmgren downplays rivalry with Victor Wembanyama

Chet Holmgren was not going to be dragged into a rivalry debate with Victor Wembanyama. He spoke to ESPN’s Malika Andrews on Thursday during a sit-down.

“I don’t think it’s ever been up to the players or teams to declare rivalries, so you’re asking the wrong person,” Chet said before flashing a sly smile. “Not a full sentence, I don’t think,” he recalled. “But not in like a, don’t take that and run with it in the wrong way, media, I don’t know, we’ve just never really crossed paths.”

Both players have met twice this season with San Antonio holding a 2-0 record. Their last matchup saw Victor Wembanyama finish with 12 points, five rebounds and three assists, while Holmgren added seven points, giving the Thunder their third loss in their last five games.
