Week 1 Big East men's basketball honors

On Monday, the Big East conference announced Zuby Ejiofor from St. John’s and Providence’s Stefan Vaaks earned the first installment of weekly honors this season.

Ejiofor was named Big East Player of the Week after an average of 22 points and eight rebounds in two games of action, while Vaaks was named Big East Freshman of the Week after an average of 18 points per game in a pair of outings.

In an 108-74 season opening win against Quinnipiac on Nov. 3, Ejiofor scored 17, snagged six rebounds, three assists and a blocked shot in 24 minutes.

In Saturday’s 103-96 loss against Alabama, the senior carried St. John’s with a double-double (27 points and 10 rebounds), to go along with three assists, two steals and two blocks in 28 minutes of action.

Vaaks led Providence in double figures with 19 points – on 5-of-9 from the field – highlighted by three makes from long range and 6-of-6 from the charity stripe in an 89-79 win over Holy Cross on Nov. 3.

Against Virginia Tech, the freshman finished 17 points, with four long range conversions and grabbed three rebounds as Providence fell 107-101 in Uncasville, CT.

Big East Honor Roll – Butler graduate forward Michael Ajayi

Ajayi highlighted a 2-0 Bulldogs start to the season with a pair of double-double outings – 24 points and 12 rebounds against Southern Indiana and 11 points and a game-high 14 rebounds against IU Indy.

UConn senior center Tarris Reed Jr.

Reed notched his 11th career double-double (20 points and 12 rebounds) in 17 minutes of play in a 110-47 win over UMass Lowell on Nov. 7.

DePaul senior forward NJ Benson

Benson became the first DePaul Blue Demons player to start the season with back-to-back double-doubles since 2009 with an average of 16 points and 10 rebounds per game in both wins this past week.

Georgetown junior guard KJ Lewis

Lewis nearly finished with a double-double with 16 points and nine rebounds in a 70-60 win over Maryland on Nov. 7 to cap off a 2-0 start for Georgetown.

Villanova redshirt sophomore guard Bryce Lindsay

Lindsay led the conference with an average of 23.5 points per game in the first week – highlighted by 22 points – on five three-point conversions against BYU on Nov. 3.
