The Edmonton Oilers’ 3-1 win over the Boston Bruins on Thursday night was tempered by concern in goal after newly acquired goaltender Tristan Jarry was forced to leave the game with a lower-body injury late in the second period.

Jarry exited at the 16:55 mark after making a routine lateral save that required him to slide post-to-post across the crease. There was no collision or contact on the play but the goaltender appeared to tweak something during the movement and did not return. Calvin Pickard replaced him and finished the game.

The injury immediately reignited scrutiny of Edmonton’s recent goaltending swap with Pittsburgh which sent Stuart Skinner to the Penguins in exchange for Jarry in a multi-player trade just days earlier. While Jarry was acquired for his experience and upside, his history of lower-body injuries had been viewed as the primary risk in the deal.

Following are some fan reactions from X after Jarry’s exit:

“We traded Skinner for a glass case and so Pickard can be our starter😭😭”

“The injury prone goalie we traded for is….injured,” quipped one user. “Boy, thats a pretty harmless looking play to get hurt on,” commented another fan.

Many pointed to Skinner’s durability as one of his defining strengths while others expressed frustration that Jarry was injured just two games into his Oilers tenure on what appeared to be a harmless play.

“This was always the risk with Jarry. Clearly better than Skinner but struggled to stay healthy. This is on Stan for not being interested enough when prior goalies were available. He cornered himself and now has to live with what may or may not happen now going forward,” wrote one user.

@Bob_Stauffer @EdmontonOilers The one thing Stu had was durability

@Bob_Stauffer @EdmontonOilers 2 games in he already hurt which looked like a routine play I'm officially concerned

Before leaving, Jarry had stopped 12 of 13 shots. Boston’s lone goal came earlier on the power play while Edmonton received goals from Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Connor McDavid and Quinn Hutson to secure the victory.

Kris Knoblauch provides no clear update on Tristan Jarry’s situation

During his postgame media availability, Oilers head coach Kris Knoblauch was asked directly about Jarry’s status following the goaltender’s early exit.

Knoblauch offered little in the way of immediate clarity saying the team would need more time to assess the situation.

“We’ll see,” he said. “I’m not sure how serious it is, but no updates right now.”

Tristan Jarry has missed time at several points in his career due to injury. In April 2022, he suffered a right foot injury late in the regular season that sidelined him heading into the playoffs. During the 2022-23 season, he missed extended time after sustaining a lower-body injury during the NHL Winter Classic.

More recently in November 2025, Jarry was placed on injured reserve with a lower-body injury and missed multiple weeks before returning.
