We now know why Florida's 7-foot-9 Olivier Rioux hardly plays for the Gators

The Florida Gators have a 7-foot-9 basketball player, Olivier Rioux.

Despite being the tallest player in the country, Rioux hardly plays.

This season, Rioux has gotten into eight games. He has attempted three shots fromthe floor, making two, and he split a trip to the foul line. He also has four rebounds, one turnover and two fouls to go with his five points.

It's his second year at Florida. He redshirted on the national championship team a season ago.

Fans often notice him and wonder why he's not playing more. And a bit of a social media argument has led to some more insight.

Why doesn't 7-foot-9 Olivier Rioux play more for Florida?

It comes down to the fact that Rioux doesn't have the skill or the movement ability to make his height worthwhile.

"He has neither the height, awareness, footwork, nor touch to keep up and meaningfully contribute on an SEC squad," wrote the popular NCAA Buzzer Beaters account on X.

I mean, he’s proven to be be somewhat valuable as an inbounds defender and screener.

We saw him played for Canada in the U19 World Cup this summer

Florida also has "3 NBA-level bigs in front of him," that same account wrote as part of a further explanation.

Rioux still has potential. You can't teach height. But he's got to continue to work to turn that potential into production.
