We've always left food out for the ferals and strays. Normally they all run the second they see us and wait for us to go inside with the door closed to approach and eat the food we've left out. Enter Fry (named from Futurama and

because French fries was the first thing we tried luring it in to the house with). This cat would sit at our door and wait. Would never let us get closer than 2-3ft but it

wouldn't run like the others. It got to the point where we would look out the door and see it at the neighbors house and we could open the door and it would come trotting over. Last week in Dallas

there was bad winter weather so we knew we had to get it inside in order to save its life. With the help of some very stinky wet food, we managed to get it inside long enough to close the door. 8

days later and I'd say it's adapting to its new life pretty well. Vet visit is tomorrow and we can finally find out the gender of the cat. Luckily Fry can work either way.

UPDATE #1: Vet visit went as poorly as I expected. Fry would not let anyone get close, jumped out of the carrier, and made a mess of the room. The vet was

finally able to get Fry back in the carrier and will have to be held overnight to get sedatives in the morning. While not the outcome I wanted, this will allow us to get the full gauntlet of tests and

vaccinations we need to get instead of having to come back multiple times. Will update again tomorrow after I've received more information from the vet have brought Fry home.

Emotional-Dog8118 Glad it's working out for Fry!!!! You are awesome for saving their life from being harsh out in the wild. Hopefully they warm up to you ald eventually allow pets and scritches!! 666

  • It’ll take time, but cats like this almost always come around at their own pace. Right now everything is new and loud and confusing, so distance feels safer. Once routines settle and the house starts to feel predictable, curiosity usually wins. One day you’ll notice they’re sitting closer, then closer again, and eventually there’s a cautious head bump asking for pets. Trust builds quietly, but when it shows up, it’s worth the wait.

freya_kahlo Good work! That is an adorable kitty!

One-Focus-5138 Oh poor Fry, the vet visit is so scary. But Fry will get over it and will be relieved to come back home. Our feral turned the room upside down too, don't know how the vets do it, but they

persevere and get the job done. So lovely that you have taken in this kitty. You'll need lots of patience, but it will be well worth it

  • Patience is absolutely a necessity with a cat like this. Progress doesn’t happen in big dramatic moments, it happens in tiny steps you almost miss if you’re not paying attention. Every calm day, every quiet meal, every moment they choose to stay instead of run is part of the work. Rushing it only scares them back. Giving them time tells them they’re safe, and that’s what makes everything else possible.

HollysStaff Thank you for all your efforts in caring for Fry! What a great story! You are Fry's angels.

  • It really feels like you two were meant to find each other. Out of all the doors in the world, that cat picked yours and kept coming back like it knew something you didn’t yet. Some connections just build themselves quietly until you realize they’re permanent. The timing, the weather, the trust growing at the exact moment it needed to all lines up in a way that’s hard to ignore.
