And new ONE featherweight Muay Thai world champion?Nico Carrillo off to a great start in the featherweight division
Nico Carrillo long competed in the bantamweight division until it was already difficult for him to make weight, which affected his performance. He then moved up to featherweight, where he has gotten off to a great start and positioned himself to be a force to be reckoned with.
The 27-year-old Glasgow, Scotland native has had two featherweight matches so far in ONE Championship, which he won emphatically. The first was in April at ONE Fight Night 30, where he dominated veteran Thai fighter Sitthichai Sitsongpeenong on his way to a second-round knockout win. He remained potent with his striking in his last match in November at ONE Fight Night 37, steadily tearing down American Luke Lessei to a second-round TKO victory.
The back-to-back wins thrust him inside the top five featherweight contenders' list, placing at No. 4 currently.
In explaining his decision to move to featherweight from bantamweight, Nico Carrillo said he just felt that at this stage of his career, the 155-pound division suits him better, allowing him to produce great results.
Carrillo's last bantamweight match was in January, where he lost to Nabil Anane by TKO in the opening round for the interim Muay Thai world title.
