Two-time F1 champion Fernando Alonso started P14 at the Mexico City GP and lost multiple positions on the opening lap. The Spaniard, then, in an attempt to regain ground, made a sensational double overtake on the second lap of the race on Liam Lawson and Pierre Gasly.
The Aston Martin driver started the race in P14 and got a great start off the line, and battled Carlos Sainz going into Turn 1. However, the fellow countryman turned into Alonso as the two-time champ hugged the apex, which led to minimal front wing endplate damage, and Alonso lost multiple positions.
At the same time, multiple drivers failed to keep it within the track limits and then cut the first corner, which further led to Fernando Alonso bleeding some positions. Towards the end of the lap in the stadium section, the Spaniard lost another spot to Pierre Gasly.
The 44-year-old took to the team radio and complained about drivers cutting the first corner and gaining an advantage. The race engineer then asked Alonso to settle into a rhythm, and that is when the magical double overtake came.
As Lap 2 was coming to a close and the drivers entered the final sector, Pierre Gasly ran wide and over the curb on Turn 11 exit, which allowed Fernando Alonso to pass on the straight. The Spaniard then moved to the right and took the inside line into Turn 12, overtaking Liam Lawson, battling him through the stadium section, and made the move stick.
In just a matter of corners, the Aston Martin driver overtook a couple of drivers and regained some of the ground he lost on the opening lap. Unfortunately, midway through the race, Fernando Alonso suffered a brake issue, which forced him to retire.
Fernando Alonso slams FIA for the “unfair” Lap 1 decision
Multiple drivers cut the first sequence of corners at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, and failed to give the position back, or rejoined in the same position. Fernando Alonso came out and detailed how he got a good start, kept it within the lines, but others just cut the corner and maintained their position.
Slamming FIA stewards for not giving any penalties for the Lap 1 mayhem, Alonso said,
“We made up some places, we were aggressive into Turn 1 and everything was looking good. But I think a couple of cars went just straight in Turn 2 and 3 and then they rejoined like three or four cars in front of me. So it’s a little bit unfair, I would say. It’s the second time in a row that on the first lap in the first corner, the FIA is looking to the other side. So, lesson learned.” (via F1TV’s livestream)Fernando Alonso was not the only one, as George Russell also came out and slammed the race stewards' decision.
