Watch: Corey Day makes crucial mistake as the HMS star smacks the wall at Perth Motorplex in High Limit International

Corey Day walked into Night 2 of the High Limit International with momentum and expectations, but ended in frustration. The American teenager came off a preliminary victory on Night 1, and Sunday’s success immediately placed him among the drivers to watch as the Perth Motorplex week rolled forward.

Coming into the second prelim, Day had confidence in the U3 Williams Motorsports car after closing out the opener. He qualified sixth for the feature, while Buddy Kofoid was on the pole for the 30-lap main. That set the stage for a battle with Kofoid up front.

Day worked forward quickly, and soon, he was fighting for the lead. While battling at the front, he brushed the wall, lost momentum, and surrendered track position. FloRacing posted the clip on X with the caption:

“If you love a good slidejob, Monday night’s #HighLimitRacing feature at Perth Motorplex was chef’s kiss. 🤌🔥”

For Corey Day, that one mistake was the deciding factor. He lined up second twice on safety car restarts, stuck in dirty air, unable to control the lane. Each time, he slipped backward, eventually slotting home fourth at the finish.

Without the wall hit, Day would have taken the lead back, and the race would have ended differently. Instead, Buddy Kofoid regained rhythm, Brad Sweet led briefly, and the front of the pack shuffled multiple times as the final laps went down. Kofoid held on when it mattered, as Jock Goodyer and Dayne Kingshott completed the podium.

Everything turns to Tuesday, December 30. The second annual High Limit International wraps up with the $110,000-to-win AUD finale, the richest purse in Australian speedway history. It is the only sprint feature left on the schedule.

Corey Day is already locked into the Dash with the other top point earners. The names around him underline the level of competition: Buddy Kofoid, Jock Goodyer, Dayne Kingshott, Kaiden Manders, and James McFadden - all carrying form.

Another driver circling Day is his mentor, Kyle Larson. The defending High Limit International winner has had an uneven week. Mechanical trouble ruined Night 1 and left him 17th. Night 2 was better as he qualified P6 and brought it home fifth, right behind Day. But he still needs to race his way through Tuesday’s heats, and a win takes him directly into the Dash.

For Corey Day, the job is simple. He has already shown that he can win in Perth. Now, he has to deliver under pressure.
