If Lonzo Ball is truly an asset that the Golden State Warriors are having second thoughts about adding to their roster via buyout (per the Stein Line’s Marc Stein), the seven-time NBA champions should begin exploring other options.
In Sports Illustrated’s Joey Akeley’s mind, a 37-year-old five-time All-Star and NBA Finals hero should be an asset the Warriors keep tabs on.
“Love still averages 12.0 rebounds per 36 minutes, which would easily rank if first on the Warriors,” Akeley wrote Tuesday.
“He's also still a threat from the perimeter, shooting 36.4 percent from three. The 37-year-old is in the last year of a two-year deal, making him a prime buyout candidate.”
Love is one of the reasons Curry doesn’t have five championships on his resume. The former Cleveland Cavaliers forward was tasked with defending Curry late in a win-or-go-home Game 7 NBA Finals contest in 2016, and there’s no question he delivered.
Love’s unexpectedly impressive lateral quickness forced Curry to throw up a prayer with the Warriors trailing 92-89 with less than 40 seconds left. Curry’s jumper was off the mark, and the Cavaliers went on to secure a series-ending 93-89 victory.
While it’s unlikely Love will be a part of another clutch NBA moment, he’s still a serviceable role player who can find success from beyond the arc.
Considering that perimeter shooting is still an area of improvement for the Dubs, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to bring Love onboard this season if he gets bought out by the Jazz.
