The Golden State Warriors started the offseason in a big way, initially being named the favorite to land LeBron James in free agency. They were also quickly linked to a potential trade for Anthony Davis.
However, neither of those moves came to fruition. Davis was never traded, while James ultimately signed with the Philadelphia 76ers.
“LeBron James is signing with the Philadelphia 76ers for his final run at another NBA championship, he announced Friday," ESPN's Dave McMenamin wrote. "James, 41, is signing a two-year, $8 million contract with a player option, Klutch Sports Group CEO Rich Paul told ESPN's Shams Charania."
Without adding another major star to pair with Steph Curry, the future in Golden State appears uncertain. ESPN’s Kendrick Perkins has even urged Curry to develop an exit strategy from the Warriors.
“Steph needs to be planning his exit strategy from the Golden State Warriors," said Perkins on 'NBA Today'. "Think about it, over the last four years, the Warriors have been in the play-in tournament. And this year, the way that the West is stacked up, they're gonna be a play-in tournament team again. You can't waste any more time hoping and banking that Mike Dunleavy is gonna get it right or is gonna make the moves that are needed to make sure that you can compete for a title, especially in a tough Western Conference.
With the future looking uncertain, a trade involving Curry could eventually become a possibility. Heavy.com’s Adel Ahmad proposed a four-team blockbuster that would send Curry to the Dallas Mavericks while bringing Max Christie, Dereck Lively II and Donte DiVincenzo to Golden State.
“Mavs receive: Steph Curry, Dalton Knecht, a 2029 first round pick (via MIN) and second round picks in 2031 and 2032 (via LAL). Lakers receive: Klay Thompson and a 2033 second round pick (via GSW). Wolves receive: P.J. Washington and Jake LaRavia. Warriors receive: Dereck Lively II, Max Christie, Donte DiVincenzo, and first round picks in 2029 and 2031 (via DAL),” Ahmad wrote.
This deal would give the Warriors a strong foundation for the future by bringing in young talent and multiple first-round picks. All three players are talented, especially Lively, who has the potential to become a major defensive presence and a reliable interior player.
Christie, Lively and DiVincenzo make a combined $100 million on their current contracts. Meanwhile, Curry would join an exciting Dallas roster featuring former No. 1 overall pick Cooper Flagg.
If Golden State ultimately decides to move on from its franchise cornerstone, this proposed trade would give the Warriors a significant return while allowing Curry to join another team with championship aspirations. It is a massive deal, but one that could make sense for all four teams involved.
