After a near-decade of dominance through the mid-2010s to the early 2020s, the Golden State Warriors are finally slowing down, sitting in ninth place in the Western Conference with a record of 32-34. However, there may be a familiar face that can give Steph Curry one last chance at a Finals run.
The Golden State dynasty’s first four Finals runs all had one thing in common: the opponent was the Cleveland Cavaliers, which pitted Curry against the other face of the NBA, LeBron James. FanSided’s Christopher Kline believes that this former rival-turned-Olympic-teammate could be the answer the Dubs are looking for.
“This is not the first time we've heard rumblings of LeBron James and Stephen Curry teaming up in Golden State. Rich Paul famously put a stop to trade talks between the Lakers and Warriors in 2024. LeBron and Steph are longtime rivals and clear off-court friends. Draymond and LeBron are marquee Klutch Sports clients and also longtime friends. If James is ready to depart L.A., which it feels like he is, the Warriors make a ton of sense for business and basketball reasons alike…LeBron's playmaking feel, combined with Steph's constant motion and gravity, could render Golden State extremely difficult to contain. James isn't quite the player he was in his prime, but even as he approaches his 42nd birthday, LeBron can score at all three levels and he probably looks better in Golden State, with a chance to really run the offense, than he does as Luka Dončić's sidekick in L.A.,” Kline wrote.
So far this season, LeBron is averaging 21.4 points, 5.7 rebounds, 7.0 assists, and 1.1 steals in 33.1 minutes per game. Add him with Curry, Jimmy Butler, and Draymond Green, and the Dubs have a veteran core that is pretty intimidating.
However, the only snag with this idea is the fact that the most likely move for LeBron is to sign with Cleveland once again. As Kline noted, he’s almost 42, so his time in the NBA is almost done. Finishing where he was born, raised, and started his NBA career is the poetic end needed for a player as legendary as he is.
However, if the Warriors can appeal to LeBron’s competitive spirit, there might be a way to get him to Golden State. Hopefully they can, to give Curry a proper send out as well.
