The Golden State Warriors have had free-agent forward LeBron James at the top of their target list throughout the offseason.
Pairing Steph Curry with James would give the Warriors one final chance to compete for a championship in the Curry era. Due to James' relationship with Curry and Draymond Green, who is currently a free agent but expected to return to the Bay Area, Golden State initially thought they would be the favorite to land the 22-time All-Star.
However, as the days go on, it sounds like the Warriors' confidence in signing James has only diminished, and the latest updates are just brutal news for the franchise.
Warriors' chances of signing LeBron James seem to be dwindling
Warriors ESPN reporter Anthony Slater said on Monday that the team plans to leave a roster spot open for James, but there is low optimism that the future Hall of Fame will actually pick Golden State as his next and likely final NBA home.
"On the James front, Warriors sources continue to express a low level of optimism that James will ultimately pick them as his next team, but they intend to keep roster space open for James until he ultimately declares his choice," Slater wrote.
Over the weekend, NBA insider Marc Stein reported that James returning to the Cleveland Cavaliers seems to be the scenario to beat, and LeBron going back home to end his career has gained a ton of steam in recent days.
Missing out on James would be a complete disaster for the Warriors. Golden State has put all its eggs in this one basket, and as of right now, it looks like they are going to completely swing and miss on their James pursuit
The Warriors could target DeMar DeRozan or a trade for Trey Murphy III as a backup plan if James doesn't sign with them. However, neither of those moves would elevate Golden State into a title contender or create much excitement.
Golden State took a risk by waiting for James to make a decision and not bolstering the roster with other free agency moves, and it appears it's going to bite them in the back. All signs point to LeBron choosing a team other than the Warriors in 2026, and once again, the Warriors are on the verge of failing Curry, whose final years are currently being wasted on a fringe playoff team.
