The Golden State Warriors’ G-League affiliate, the Santa Cruz Warriors, doesn’t receive as much attention as the big dogs for obvious reasons.
However, they’re still a professional squad that makes interesting moves from time to time. On Feb. 10, the franchise acquired a 6-foot ex-Atlanta Hawks guard via a trade.
“The Santa Cruz Warriors, the NBA G League affiliate of the Golden State Warriors, have acquired guard Deivon Smith from the College Park Skyhawks,” Santa Cruz stated.
“In exchange, the Warriors traded a first-round pick (from Rip City) and a second-round pick (from South Bay via Long Island) in the 2026 NBA G League Draft to College Park.”
After failing to make the Hawks’ opening night roster this season, Smith signed with the organization’s minor league squad (Skyhawks). Smith averaged 8.1 points and 4.3 assists per game with College Park, shooting 42.6% from the field and 14.3% from three.
Although the St. John’s product hasn’t been with Santa Cruz for long, he’s already made a tremendous first impression with the organization. Smith is contributing 29.0 points and 7.0 assists per game with his new team thus far, connecting on 51.4% of his field goals and 60% from beyond the arc in two contests.
The sample size is small, but Smith has already shown he’s an athletic, speedy guard the Warriors should keep a close eye on moving forward.
