Warframe: Uriel companion Abilities, explained

On top of having the usual quartet of Warframe abilties, Uriel comes with three demon minions at your side. The average summoner Warframe (Caliban) is a simple command-and-conquer type to use their companions as turrets. In the case of Uriel, however, the minions float around doing their own things, and interacting with said things is important to effectively use his kit.

When all is said and done, though, this Warframe is easy to get used to. Much easier than the mechanical practice of Lavos or the spaghetti ability-creep of Equinox, at any rate.

Uriel Warframe Passive: What do the companions do?

Once you unlock all three of your basic abilities, you automatically get three demonic companions with Uriel. These don't need to be separately summoned, they're always at your side after unlocking the first three abilities. They're not even tied to ability usage, and conduct their business the same regardless of what you're doing.

On the down-right corner of the screen, over the Energy meter, you can see another red meter (we'll get to that later), and three icons with their own circular health pools. These are your minions - Catenach, Gulphagor, and Vythelas.

Catenach (the skeletal triangular one) will hover to nearby enemies, and then chain up to 5 of them together for 10 seconds. In this duration, the enemies are slowed by 50% (scaling up to 95% with Ability Strength), and damaging any enemy transfers the full damage to all chained enemies, similar to Kullervo's Collective Curse.

  • Ability Range increases the maximum possible distance between two enemies for them to be chained (2 meters by default).
  • Ability Duration increases the amount of time the chains last.
  • Ability Sterngth increases the slow amount, up to 95%.

Gulphagor (the bird-like creature) is a face-hugger. It will fly into a singular enemy's head and latch on to them for 10 seconds. During this, the enemy takes a small amount of Heat damage with Heat procs, and is stunned completely. Killing this enemy whilst the effect is active boosts their Health Orb and Energy Orb drop chance to 300% and 100% respectively, and leaves a ring of fire that deals Heat damage.

  • Ability Range increases the radius of the ring of fire left after you kill the marked enemy.
  • Ability Duration increases the latch duration.
  • Ability Strength increases the damage of both the initial and ring of fire Heat ticks, but more importantly, the chance to drop Health and Energy Orbs.

Vythelas (the mini-Dante imp) consumes a nearby enemy corpse to create a Demonium Rune. These grant a 30% fire rate buff for 10 seconds, and 30% additional Heat damage instance to your active weapon magazine. The Heat damage buff acts as a separate damage instance, similar to the behaviour of Saryn's Toxic Lash or Cyte-09's Resupply.

  • Ability Range does not effect this ability.
  • Ability Duration increases the fire rate buff duration.
  • Ability Stregnth increases both the fire rate and Heat damage buff.

Ultimately, all you have to do as Uriel is pay attention to when Gulphagor latches on to an enemy to kill it, and collect Deomium Runes whenever one is close.

The Demonium Rune economy is much looser in a squad. Ordinarily, Vythelas will stop creating Runes after 3 of them are up and you're solo. However, a teammate using a Rune (which still leaves it for you to collect later on your end) circumvents this limit, so it will create one more once an ally has picked up a Rune. As long as allies keep picking up Runes, it can create more indefinitely, as it resets the 3-Rune limit every time.
