Vikings predicted to sign $160M 2-time Pro Bowler, former Rookie of the Year to replace JJ McCarthy

The Minnesota Vikings are searching for their potential starting quarterback after last season didn’t go smoothly with J.J. McCarthy. One name that is appealing to the Vikings right now is Kyler Murray, who was recently released by the Arizona Cardinals.

“The Kyler Murray era with the Arizona Cardinals is officially coming to a close. After months of speculation about Murray's future with the team, Arizona informed the 2019 No. 1 draft pick that it plans to release him next Wednesday, when the new league year begins, barring a trade, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter on Monday,” Josh Weinfuss of ESPN wrote.

There is growing belief that Murray could become the next quarterback for Minnesota as the offseason unfolds. The Vikings appear to be weighing their options between Murray and Kirk Cousins.

“The Vikings have made it clear they aren't willing to trust J.J. McCarthy to be their starting quarterback next season. They tried that in 2025 and it didn't turn out well for anyone in Minnesota. Kyler Murray is the top-rated signal caller still on the board which makes him an ideal target for the Vikings. He may not be a perfect stylistic fit for what Kevin O'Connell wants to do, but he's simply a better player than McCarthy. That, combined with the ability to sign him for a low salary makes him a perfect addition for the NFC North squad,” FanSided’s Rucker Haringey wrote.

If the Vikings do move forward with Murray, ESPN analyst Louis Riddick believes the job would clearly be his.

“It's over. It's over for J.J. [McCarthy]. ... I know [Minnesota] moved up to 10 to pick him, it's going to be time to move on from him,” Riddick said.

Murray’s career in Arizona didn’t fully pan out due to injuries and inconsistent seasons. However, there is no denying the talent that the former No. 1 overall pick possesses as he looks to get his career back on track.

Minnesota missed the playoffs last season and is looking to bounce back. As the offseason continues, it is becoming increasingly clear that the Vikings may believe Murray is the quarterback who can help lead them back.
