Vikings have 2 logical QB trade options after Carson Wentz injury and neither is Kirk Cousins

The Minnesota Vikings need to add another quarterback.

Truth be told, that was probably the case even before Carson Wentz's season-ending shoulder injury, but now the Vikings are in an even more precarious spot.

J.J. McCarthy is expected to return from injury in Week 9, but he remains a total wild card after not showing many positives over his two starts this season.

And, with Wentz gone, there is no longer a veteran insurance policy on the roster, as rookie and undrafted free agent Max Brosmer is now the backup, although we wouldn't expect that to last for long.

The Vikings need to add a veteran quarterback before the Nov. 4 trade deadline, and as we see it, there are two viable options.

No, one of them is not former Vikings and current Atlanta Falcons quarterback Kirk Cousins, who is simply owed too much money to make it worth acquiring him and there has been no indication the Falcons are willing to pick any of that up.

If Cousins didn't look like a shell of his former self, we might think differently, but the media circus that will come with him simply isn't worth the results he would produce if he ever saw the field.

The two quarterbacks the Vikings should be targeting are Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston, both of whom reside with the New York Giants.

Both signal-callers would offer the Vikings the veteran option they need, and neither one is anywhere near as expensive as Cousins.

Wilson's contract runs out after 2025 and Winston is on a cheap $8 million deal that runs through 2026 but can be easily ripped up next offseason if Minnesota doesn't want to keep him.

We would prefer Winston, as he offers more upside despite his gunslinger mentality that often leads to turnovers. He is also likely better than the clearly declined Wilson, and he offers a solid backup option for next season.

But if the Vikings have to settle for Wilson, he wouldn't be the worst option in the world. And, who knows, maybe he can revive his career in Minnesota like we've seen other quarterbacks do over the years.
