Victor Wembanyama under ‘aura farming’ fire after Spurs’ Game 4 meltdown in NBA Finals

Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs find themselves facing elimination after falling behind 3-1 in the NBA Finals series. The young superstar endured a difficult finish in Game 4, missing 10 of his last 12 field-goal attempts and failing to convert two crucial free throws down the stretch.

Following San Antonio’s heartbreaking one-point defeat, sports analyst Nick Wright placed much of the blame for the collapse on Wembanyama.

“They guy who (was) supposed to be the best player in the world, and in the 2nd half of that game after trash talking and what the kids would call aura farming, and letting everyone know how in their head he was,” Wright said in the latest episode of his podcast.

“He went 3 for 14, looked absolutely winded and in a 4th quarter, where Stephon Castle, who’s younger than him  went 8 for 8 from the free throw line. Dylan Harper, who’s younger than him, went 2 for 2 from the free throw line, he went 1 for 4 including 2 misses in the final hundred seconds up 1 of a finals game.”

However, criticism of Wembanyama may overlook the extraordinary expectations he has carried since being selected first overall in 2023. Through his first three NBA seasons, he has produced historic numbers, averaging 23.4 points, 11 rebounds, 3.5 assists, 1.1 steals, and 3.5 blocks per game.

Wembanyama still finished with 24 points and 13 rebounds in Game 4. However, the Knicks’ defense tightened after halftime, limiting him to just eight points in the second half as New York completed an incredible comeback.

Despite the disappointing loss, there are reasons to believe Wembanyama can respond in Game 5. He recently became the youngest player in NBA history to score more than 500 points in a single postseason.

Game 3 also provided a blueprint for success, as Wembanyama dominated with 32 points and 6 assists in that game, proving how difficult he is to defend when the Spurs’ offense creates proper spacing. That performance also proved that the Knicks can struggle to contain his impact when the Spurs execute their game plan effectively.
