The Buffalo Sabres opted to trade JJ Peterka rather than extend him.
The Utah Mammoth had no such qualms.
Almost immediately after acquiring Peterka in a trade late Wednesday night, the Mammoth inked him to a contract extension.
The Athletic's Pierre LeBrun reported that it's for five years and $7.7 million per year, a total value of $38.5 million.
Peterka was swapped for two players, Josh Doan and Michael Kesselring.

For Utah, it has the potential to be a fantastic acquisition.
Peterka, originally from Germany, is a 23-year old winger coming off his best NHL season. In 2024-25, he had 27 goals and 41 assists for an easy career-high of 68 points.
The Mammoth had to give up two players aged 23 and 25 to get the deal done, but neither had proven to be as productive at the NHL level yet as Peterka.
Getting him on a new contract right away makes it a successful piece of business for Utah, which is continuing to try and grow its franchise brand entering its second year in a new place.
Adding Peterka's speed and scoring ability is a great place to start.
