US Trade Chief Greer, Others to Tout Affordability at Auto Show

(Bloomberg) — A trio of Trump administration officials will visit Ford Motor Co.’s and Stellantis NV’s Ohio operations this week, in a swing to highlight both domestic manufacturing and affordability.

US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer will be joined by US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy and EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin for a two-day trip billed as the “Freedom Means Affordable Cars Tour.” The group will visit a Ford plant near Cleveland and a Stellantis plant in Toledo, before attending the Detroit Auto Show on Saturday.

The Cabinet officials’ trip through the Midwest comes as the White House confronts voter frustration about cost-of-living issues with midterm elections looming later this year that stand to tip the balance of power in Washington. An AP-NORC poll conducted between Jan. 8 and Jan. 11 found that 37% of US adults approve of the President Donald Trump’s handling of the economy.

USTR is responsible for negotiating trade agreements with other countries. In a statement, it said that Trump’s tariff policy and the auto rules under the US-Mexico-Canada trade agreement spurs investment and bolsters domestic manufacturing.

This trip comes as the EPA is finalizing both the rollback of greenhouse gas standards for vehicles, and relatedly of the endangerment finding, a landmark scientific determination that greenhouses pose a threat to human health and welfare.

Stellantis announced in October a $13 billion investment in the US over four years, in what was billed as the company’s single largest pledge in its more than its 100-year history. Despite a number of recent manufacturing commitments, some analysts expect US auto sales to slow this year amid consumer concerns about higher costs.

While visiting a Ford plant in Michigan this week, Trump told reporters that there’s “no real advantage” to the USMCA. It’s up for renegotiation this summer.

Ford and other carmakers have pushed the White House to negotiate a new North American trade deal in order to maintain a cost advantage for their domestic manufacturing presence.

“The administration has been great to work with, they always answer the phone,” Ford Chief Executive Officer Jim Farley said in an interview with Bloomberg Television. “But there is a long list of things we have to work through.”

“We need to change USMCA,” he added. “We built our entire vehicle business as an industry between Canada, Mexico and the US. We have to get this revised.”
