(Bloomberg) — The US can’t just unilaterally impose a peace plan upon Tehran, Iran’s ambassador to Japan Peiman Seadat said Thursday, as the two countries continue to give conflicting signals on talks with no clear conclusion to hostilities in sight.

“It cannot be that he comes up with a peace plan and then says, ‘I will impose it,’” Seadat said in Tokyo, apparently referring to US President Donald Trump. “No unilateral imposition. That is not acceptable,” he added.

The White House has insisted that peace talks with Iran are ongoing, even as Tehran publicly rejected US overtures and issued fresh conditions of its own to end the conflict.

“I think it cannot be the case that the aggressor decides or plans to come up with something just unilaterally,” Seadat said after meeting with a pro-Iran interparliamentary group of Japanese lawmakers. “It’s not the Americans who will determine anything. It’s Iran.”

Seadat said that Japan may have an important role to play in the conflict given it has Iran’s trust.

Tokyo and Tehran have long had friendly relations, stemming from longstanding historical ties as well as Japan’s heavy reliance on the Middle East for its energy. About 90% of Japan’s oil comes from the area.

“Any initiative that might come from any country, like Japan, France, we will be able to look at it,” he said. “But we need to be mindful that Iran has demands, and these demands are very legitimate.”

Seadat’s comments were made the same day Japan began releasing oil from its national reserves. A day prior, Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi asked the head of the International Energy Agency to prepare for an additional coordinated release of oil reserves should it be required.
