Urban Meyer believes Miami’s biggest problem entering its College Football Playoff quarterfinal matchup is an offense that may not be built to keep pace with the nation’s top defense.
During this week's The Triple Option podcast, the FOX Sports analyst said he has concerns about how the Hurricanes will generate points against the Ohio State Buckeyes in the Cotton Bowl on New Year’s Eve.
“I’m just concerned about Miami’s offense,” Meyer said. “I just don’t know how Miami is going to score points against the top defense in the land. If Ohio State scores two touchdowns, they win.”
Miami’s offense drew scrutiny in its 10-3 win over Texas A&M Aggies, managing just 278 total yards and committing a single turnover. While the Hurricanes advanced, the performance reinforced season-long questions. Miami ranks 35th nationally in yards per game after leading the country a year ago.
Meyer acknowledged Miami’s defense has been strong, particularly against Texas A&M, but said the Hurricanes’ offensive limitations could be decisive in a low-scoring game.
Ohio State is not without issues of its own. The Buckeyes struggled offensively in a 13-10 loss to Indiana in the Big Ten Championship Game, totaling 322 yards with Julian Sayin throwing an interception.
Meyer expects Ohio State’s defense to control the game. The winner of the Cotton Bowl will advance to the College Football Playoff semifinals.
