Alabama and LSU both had an extra week to stew on this one, and it shows on the calendar: the No. 9 Crimson Tide and No. 15 Tigers meet Saturday at Tiger Stadium with plenty on the line in the SEC race and the College Football Playoff picture. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. ET on ABC.

Both teams come in at 6-2, and both are coming off a bye. LSU won its last two before the break, beating Mississippi State 31-0 and handling Auburn 38-17 on the road. Alabama has been streakier, dropping back-to-back games to Georgia and Tennessee before bouncing back with a 31-20 win over Texas A&M.

There’s also a storyline on the sideline. Lane Kiffin, the former Alabama offensive coordinator, gets his first crack at the Crimson Tide as LSU’s coach in his debut season in Baton Rouge. Across the field, Kalen DeBoer is trying to keep Alabama’s grip on this rivalry. The Tide have won the last three meetings, including a 20-9 win last November.

The market likes the Tigers at home. LSU is roughly a 5-point favorite, with a total sitting in the low 50s, as Sam Leavitt and the LSU offense get set to test Keelon Russell and an Alabama team that badly needs a signature road win.

LSU vs. Alabama value picks

The best unit on the field Saturday might be the LSU defensive front, and it lines up perfectly against Alabama’s biggest weakness. The Tigers rank second in the country in stuff rate, blowing up 28.7% of runs at or behind the line, and they’ve been one of the best havoc defenses in the sport. Alabama, meanwhile, has struggled to keep defenders out of the backfield. Only a handful of FBS offenses have allowed a higher havoc rate than the Crimson Tide.

That’s a tough spot for Keelon Russell in front of a loud Tiger Stadium crowd. When Alabama got punched in the mouth at Tennessee, the offense managed just 10 points, and LSU’s defense is better than the one the Vols trotted out.

On the other side, Sam Leavitt has kept this LSU offense on schedule all season. The Tigers are converting 53.4% of their third downs, a top-five mark nationally, and they’ve lived in manageable down-and-distance situations thanks to a success rate that ranks seventh. Alabama has been solid against the run, but the Tide have been far less reliable at keeping teams out of the end zone once drives get into scoring range.

LSU’s special teams have been shaky, and that’s the one area where Alabama holds a clear edge. Still, the Tigers should control the line of scrimmage on both sides, and Kiffin has had two weeks to get his offense ready for his old program. I’ll lay the points with LSU at home.

Alabama doesn’t want a track meet, and the numbers back that up. The Tide play at one of the slowest paces in the country, averaging just over 57 plays per game. Fewer snaps means fewer chances for this total to get away from the under.

LSU isn’t built to rip off chunk plays, either. The Tigers move the ball methodically, but they rank in the bottom third of FBS in explosiveness. Alabama has given up its share of big plays this season, so there’s a path where a couple of long gains change the math. That said, LSU hasn’t shown it can consistently create those plays, and asking an efficient-but-steady offense to suddenly turn into a big-play machine feels like a stretch.

The trenches tell the rest of the story. Alabama ranks sixth in line yards allowed on defense, while LSU gives up barely two line yards per carry. Neither team figures to run the ball with much ease, and both offenses could stall out once the field shrinks.

A bye week for both teams usually means sharper defensive game plans, too. Expect a grinder in Baton Rouge, the kind of November SEC game that finishes in the 40s.

LSU vs. Alabama best player props

Sam Leavitt’s legs set the tone for Lane Kiffin’s first season in Baton Rouge. In the opener against Clemson, the LSU quarterback ran for 113 yards and two scores, and he kept that going early on with 220 rushing yards through his first five games.

What makes Leavitt dangerous is how much of that production comes when a play breaks down. He’s piled up 160 scramble yards this season, and he’s at his best when he escapes the pocket and finds open grass. Alabama’s front is stout against designed runs, but this is a defense that has given up chunk plays, and a quarterback who can extend drives with his feet is exactly the type to exploit that.

College rushing totals count sacks against the quarterback, so a couple of drive-killing takedowns could eat into this number. That said, Kiffin has had two weeks to scheme up ways to get Leavitt on the move, and in a game this big, I expect LSU to lean on its quarterback in key spots. A few scrambles on third down and one designed keeper near the goal line should get him there.

Daniel Hill is a big, physical back at 6-foot-1 and 234 pounds, and Alabama uses him like one. He’s a between-the-tackles runner first, and the passing-game work has been light. Hill has just 15 targets all season, catching 12 passes for 98 yards.

That’s not even two targets per game, and his yards per catch sit right around 8. In other words, one reception probably doesn’t get him past this number, and he hasn’t been a consistent bet to see multiple catches.

Hill did have a handful of catches early in the year, but his role as a receiver hasn’t grown as the schedule has gotten tougher. Alabama’s slow tempo cuts into the total number of snaps, too, and LSU’s defense has been excellent at getting off the field. If the Crimson Tide fall behind and need to throw, Keelon Russell is more likely to look toward his wide receivers than to a power back on a checkdown.

Texas vs. Missouri value picks

Texas has found its footing again. After dropping back-to-back games in the middle of the season, the Longhorns bounced back with a 34-27 win over Ole Miss and a 31-3 rout of Mississippi State. Arch Manning threw three touchdown passes in that Halloween night win, but the defense was the real story, holding the Bulldogs to a lone field goal.

Look at how Missouri fared against those same two opponents. The Tigers managed just three points in a 31-3 loss at Ole Miss, and they gave up 31 in a road loss to Mississippi State. Texas handled both of those teams, and the gap between the two performances is hard to ignore.

The Longhorns weren’t perfect last week. They converted only 3 of 13 third downs and got flagged 14 times for 134 yards, the kind of sloppy night that would get them beat in Columbia. That said, they still won by four touchdowns, and a cleaner effort should be expected with Steve Sarkisian’s group fighting to stay in the SEC title race.

Missouri has been tough at home, with blowout wins over Texas A&M and Florida, so this won’t be easy in a noon kickoff at Memorial Stadium. With a total sitting in the low 40s, every point is at a premium. Still, I trust the better defense and the more proven quarterback to win by a field goal or more, and Texas has both.
