Undrafted former Michigan kicker could win Giants' game of musical chairs

1 hour ago 3

The New York Giants have already had an interesting offseason at the kicker position and we are still weeks away from the start of training camp.

This offseason, the team signed veteran Jason Sanders to a free-agent contract. But less than three months later, the team has already released him. That was a bit of a surprising move, but with three kickers on the roster, the Giants trimmed the fat by cutting the oldest one after watching him kick at OTAs.

That leaves Ben Sauls, a holdover from last season, and undrafted free agent Dominic Zvada to battle it out.

Sauls was undrafted out of Pittsburgh last season, signing with the Steelers before joining the practice squad of the Atlanta Falcons after being cut. The Giants signed him last November after the Falcons released him and, called upon to kick at the end of the season, he actually did well, making all eight of his field goal attempts and going a perfect 7-for-7 on extra points.

But the Giants couldn't have been too impressed. If they were, they wouldn't have signed Sanders.

In the practices that have taken place for the Giants thus far, it's actually been this year's undrafted rookie, Zvada, who has stood out.

Pelo visto a disputa de kicker está indo mais para o lado do rookie Dominic Zvada.

Giants' kicking battle will be between Dominic Zvada and Ben Sauls

Zvada joins the Giants after playing the last two seasons at Michigan, where he was not only part of a successful program, but he also kicked well for the team. He missed just one field goal for the team in 2024 and though he did struggle more during his senior season, he went 34-of-40 on his field goal attempts at Arkansas State before transferring to Ann Arbor.

Zvada, with a strong training camp, could be the answer to a door that has been revolving for years in New York. Since 2023, the Giants have had eight different kickers attempt at least one field goal for them. The last time the team had only one kicker for an entire season was Graham Gano in 2022.

John Harbaugh had one of the best kickers in NFL history when Justin Tucker was at his best for the Baltimore Ravens. He is going to want to establish that same formula with his new team. Though he will have to beat out Sauls convincingly to do that, he has the tools to make that happen.
