Celtics have a new alternate Giannis Antetokounmpo blockbuster option with Domantas Sabonis on the market

The Boston Celtics are being viewed as one of the biggest names to watch this offseason, as rumors swirl about a potential blockbuster trade to get a new superstar on their team. Boston’s co-franchise superstar Jaylen Brown has been floated around as a potential trade candidate, and the most likely player he would be dealt for is Giannis Antetokounmpo

It’s been floated that a haul from the New Orleans Pelicans could also warrant dealing Brown, but there could be a third choice; With the Sacramento Kings putting Domantas Sabonis on the trade block, he could be a perfect fit in Boston.

Sabonis has been one of the best big men in the NBA for a while, and is highly underrated. The two-time All-Star has career averages of 16.1 points, 10.7 rebounds, and 4.9 assists in 30.3 minutes per game. On top of that, he was the rebound champion three years in a row, and a two-time All-NBA player.

He could have been it four years in a row, but this past season, he only played 19 games before getting surgery for a meniscus tear. However, that could also lead to him being discounted in any trade negotiations.

Boston has many assets they can choose from to make this hypothetical trade work. They could deal Brown to free up $12 million in cap space, as Sabonis makes $45 million to Brown’s $57 million per year.

Another choice would be dealing a package of Derrick White and another player for Sabonis to match his contract. White is also another potential trade candidate, so this is viable as well.

Even if neither of those are options, they could also work a three-team trade. The possibilities are endless.

Sabonis gives the Celtics exactly what they need. He’s a 6’10” rebounding big man that can score from all three levels, while also being a rim protector.

In Mazzulla Ball, he would be the inside presence, and can run out to the three-point line when needed. If the Celtics cannot land Antetokounmpo, getting Sabonis should be a top priority.
