UNC 2,725-point scorer sticks with Lakers on roster in NBA G League with South Bay

The Los Angeles Lakers' G League affiliate, the South Bay Lakers, won't lack for scoring this season.

Part of their official roster, released Saturday night, is R.J. Davis.

Davis played at North Carolina and was a collegiate legend.

Davis played five seasons at UNC, compiling some of the best numbers in Tar Heels history.

He finished his career with 2,725 points, 659 rebounds, 568 assists and 178 steals. He made 359 3-pointers at a 36.7 percent clip.

Davis was an All-American in 2023-24 before falling off slightly in the Tar Heels' 2024-25 struggles.

The Lakers have a lot of fun faces on their G League team, but Davis will be an especially interesting one to watch.

Given his massively impressive 2023-24 season, it's fair to think there could be an NBA future for Davis. That makes his first professional campaign particularly key in the interests of impressing those both in the Lakers' organization and around the NBA.

Nothing is a given, of course. There are a lot of talented guards even in the G League. Because Davis isn't big, he'll really have to score and make plays to give himself a chance.

But that's pretty much all Davis did with the Tar Heels. So don't discount his chances of making an impact at the professional level, too.
