(Bloomberg) — Ukraine’s capital suffered widespread power outages on Saturday in response to what were termed cascading “technical issues” across the nation’s power grid.

The developments come as Kremlin envoy Kirill Dmitriev is set to hold talks with US officials in Miami later on Saturday, and as the UN’s nuclear watchdog raises the alarm about the perilous condition of Ukraine’s atomic power plants after persistent Russian airstrikes.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said Saturday’s emergency was caused by “technical issues on the interconnection lines between our grid and Moldova’s,” which also saw widespread power outages.

Kyiv’s underground Metro stations are operatinmg as shelters only, running on backup power. The Metro system has also been halted in Kharkiv in the northeast, and emergency power cuts were made in Zhytomyr in central Ukraine, about 140 kilometers (87 miles) west of Kyiv.

The capital region didn’t sustain airstrikes from Russia overnight, consistent with a short halt in attacks brokered this week by US President Donald Trump. Officials from US, Ukraine and Russia are expected to meet again soon in pursuit of an agreement to end the four-year war.

Moldovan Energy Minister Dorin Junghietu said the country is experiencing a partial blackout after a voltage drop in Ukraine triggered automatic protection system and cut off power. The Moldovan operator is working to reestablish power, Junghietu said, urging the population to remain calm.
