(Bloomberg) — The UK will open a business center in Kyiv this year to help defense startups send more military hardware into Ukraine.

The center will help small-and-medium sized British firms — whose efforts to operate in Ukraine can be complicated by travel restrictions, security and insurance requirements — to find premises and address export challenges.

It will prioritize accelerating sales of air-defense systems and drones, which Ukraine particularly needs as its war with Russia enters a fifth year.

The move comes as peace efforts, despite seeing progress, aren’t yet close to overcoming key sticking points and establishing a path to end the fighting. Europe has sought to shore up support for Kyiv, with Brussels unveiling a €90 billion ($105 billion) loan and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer pushing the US to offer security guarantees.

UK Defence Secretary John Healey told Bloomberg that the new center will “supercharge” the role British industry plays in sustaining Ukraine’s defenses.

“This facility will deliver good jobs at home and bring Ukrainian and UK defense industries closer than ever while embedding the lessons from the battlefield,” he said.

The announcement marks the first anniversary of the UK-Ukraine 100-Year partnership — aimed at boosting defense cooperation. The two nations are also set to begin mass producing Octopus interceptor drones to combat the Shahed unmanned aircraft that Russia uses to target civilian and energy infrastructure.

The Ministry of Defence said the center in Kyiv will be backed by government funding, but didn’t specify an amount.

“Economic strength and national security are inseparable,” Rupert Pearce, the UK’s new national armaments director, who oversees defense procurement, told Bloomberg. “This center will enable British companies, to partner with Ukraine and deliver the defense solutions they need now.”
