The UCLA men's volleyball team took on Ohio State on Thursday in what promised to be an exciting matchup of highly ranked teams.
And then a marathon broke out. The second set was unlike any set ever played in the history of NCAA men's volleyball.
The final score of that set, for real, was 48-46, Bruins.
These sets go to 25. Except you have to win by two.
Which means that every time a team got a set point, from 24 on through 46, the other team answered. Only when UCLA went up 47-46 did they put the set away.
According to UCLA Athletics, it's officially the longest set in men's volleyball history in the rally-scoring era.
This appears to also be longer than the longest women's volleyball D-I sets, as well, which are listed as 46-44 in two separate matches.
In the wild set, Ohio State actually had the first five set points, starting at 24-23, but UCLA fended them all off.
At the end, a big block from the Bruins went up 47-46, and then Andrew Rowan served an ace to claim the marathon frame for UCLA.
UCLA, the No. 1 team in the country, swept the No. 13 Buckeyes 25-21, 48-46, and 25-20. The Bruins improved to 8-0 on the season with the home win.
Next up for the Bruins is a national championship rematch against Long Beach State on Friday, Feb. 6. Even with the caliber on display there, it'll be tough to top a 48-46 set.
