Tyler Shough TD controversy, explained: How Saints QB's questionable goalline sneak led to shocking Ravens upset

The Saints were lovable losers in Week 1, huffing-and-puffing against the Lions before losing after failing to convert their two-point conversion attempt in overtime.

One week on, New Orleans left no doubt about its prospects in 2026. The Saints downed the Ravens away from home, escaping M&T Bank Stadium as 24-17 victors.

Tyler Shough played a leading role in the result, finding the end zone with less than a minute left in regulation to complete the turnaround.

That final score wasn't without controversy, though. Here's what you need to know.

Tyler Shough TD controversy, explained

Shough spearheaded New Orleans' comeback efforts, amassing two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to exit Baltimore with a win.

It was the second of those scores that proved dubious. Facing fourth-and-goal at the Ravens' one-yard line, Kellen Moore's offense returned to the field. Shough took the snap and lunged forward, hoping to break the plane of the goal-line and find pay dirt.

Referees signaled that Shough, indeed, had found the end zone. Replay review suggested otherwise; Shough appeared to pull up short on the goal-line, although it was hard to gauge where the ball was in relation to the barrier.

Replays also indicated that Roquan Smith grabbed a fistful of Shough's facemask.

Perhaps the on-field decision to rule Shough in was karmic justice for Smith's foul that escaped surveillance. Regardless, Shough's score proved decisive to New Orleans' upset win.

 "You know, those are so subjective and so hard to tell," Ravens head coach Jesse Minter said of the call postgame. "It is what it is, honestly."

Baltimore was in control of Sunday's game until they weren't, falling victim to ill-timed Shough brilliance. While there is sure to be some frustration with the contentious nature of Shough's alleged touchdown, the Ravens only have themselves to blame for another late-game collapse. Minter has some work to do to rid the team of its issues with maintaining focus in late-game situations.
