New Orleans Saints rookie quarterback Tyler Shough has been named the team’s starter versus the LA Rams in Week 9. Shough, selected at No. 40 in April, steps in as Spencer Rattler will be benched following turnover-heavy performances.

Shough was asked on Wednesday who he told first about getting the starting nod, and he named his wife, Jordan.

"It was my wife, for sure," Shough said. "She’s been such a huge role in this, and obviously, just up to this point from college, every journey, every step in the process, through the whole draft process. So, it was a good feeling.

"But she is also a competitor. She played soccer. She was like, 'Good, go out there and win.' She isn't satisfied with anything, neither am I. There's nothing to be excited about. We got to go out there and win."

Shough started his college career with the Oregon Ducks from 2018-2020, appearing in limited action before transferring to Texas Tech. With the Red Raiders, he suffered injuries, including two broken collarbones and a fractured fibula, which disrupted his time as a starter.

He concluded his collegiate career with the Louisville Cardinals in 2024. Shough passed for 3,195 yards and 23 touchdowns, while completing 62.7 % of his throws.

Shough signed a four-year fully guaranteed contract worth $10.8 million after his draft selection.

Saints coach Kellen Moore confirms Tyler Shough as starting QB: “We’re not looking back”

New Orleans Saints coach Kellen Moore made it clear that Tyler Shough will be the team’s starter for the rest of the 2025 season.

“Tyler’s starting," Moore told reporters on Wednesday. "We’re not looking back on that. The goal is to let Tyler play and get going.”

Shough completed 17 of 30 passes for 128 yards and an interception in his first start, a 23-3 loss to Tampa Bay last Sunday. Despite the result, Moore expressed confidence in his young quarterback.

“The biggest thing is growth,” Moore said. “You get to make mistakes and learn from them. Tyler is ready to go.”

Shough echoed his coach’s mindset.

“It was a good feeling, but we’ve got a lot of work to do,” Shough said. “We’ve got to put points on the board and win.”

The Saints are 1-7 and are continuing their rebuilding phase under Moore’s leadership.
