Tyler Allgeier has been in this situation before, and rather than letting frustration take over, the Arizona Cardinals running back is choosing to embrace the challenge.
Speaking publicly for the first time since the Cardinals selected running back Jeremiyah Love with the third overall pick in April’s NFL Draft, Allgeier made it clear he has no hard feelings about the organization’s decision. Instead, the veteran believes adding another talented player only strengthens Arizona’s offense.
“I don’t think there’s any point in being a jerk about it,” Allgeier said, emphasizing that competition is simply part of life in the NFL.
The timing of Love’s arrival surprised many around the league. In March, Allgeier signed a two-year, $12.25 million contract with Arizona, leading many to believe he would serve as the Cardinals’ featured back entering the 2026 season. Just weeks later, however, the franchise invested a premium draft pick in Love, creating one of the league’s most intriguing backfield battles.
Allgeier reveals how he really feels
For Allgeier, the situation feels familiar.
During his rookie season with the Atlanta Falcons in 2022, Allgeier rushed for 1,035 yards and looked poised to become the team’s long-term starter. The following offseason, Atlanta selected Bijan Robinson with the eighth overall pick, shifting Allgeier into a complementary role. Despite remaining productive, he never again reached the 700-yard mark during his final three seasons with the Falcons.
Rather than viewing Love as competition, Allgeier has focused on building a strong relationship with the rookie. He praised the former Notre Dame standout as “another weapon” for the Cardinals and believes the pair can help create one of the NFL’s deepest rushing attacks.
“It’s not like there’s any bad blood or anything,” Allgeier said. “We’re pretty close already. We’re just continuing to build that relationship and feed off each other on and off the field.”
As training camp continues, Arizona appears committed to utilizing both backs. If Allgeier’s team-first attitude carries onto the field, the Cardinals could benefit from a talented one-two punch capable of keeping defenses guessing throughout the season.
