Twins' Royce Lewis nightmare might not be over yet

Spring Training stats might not matter for a lot of players. It feels, though, like they are meant to matter for Royce Lewis.

There have been too many mishaps in Lewis' once-promising career with the Minnesota Twins to not at least put some stock in what he's up to currently.

And right now, Lewis is having an atrocious spring.

Lewis has 34 plate appearances. He has three hits.

Two of them have been home runs, so that's good, along with a single.

He has also struck out nine times and walked just twice.

So maybe you'd just call it a cold spell, but it's also just one more strike against Lewis in a career full of more strikes than successes.

Lewis was dinged up earlier in the spring, too -- of course he was -- tightness on his right side.

In 2023, he played 58 games. In 2024, it was 82. Last season, Lewis got into 106 contests.

Those are all seasons that go up to 162 games, and Lewis hasn't come close to a full campaign yet.

A year ago, he hit 13 home runs and had a .671 OPS, both worse totals than the two prior years. Lewis did steal 12 bases, about the only uptick in his statistics across the board.

He's still just 26 years old and is a former No. 1 overall pick. The Twins aren't giving up on Lewis.

But man, it's getting harder and harder to count on him as Twins fans. He doesn't seem likely to ever reach the great heights once expected of him.
