We first heard that Amazon picked up Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo for a series adaptation seven years ago. We didn’t hear much after that, though Bardugo shared in 2023 that there was a pilot script for the show that she helped pull together.

There’s been no official news since, but sometimes projects move at a snail’s pace. Today, however, we reportedly got confirmation that the Ninth House adaptation at Amazon is no longer moving forward, slowly or otherwise; in his latest round of answering reader questions, Matt Webb Mitovich of Matt’s Inside Line shared that his sources at Amazon MGM Studios confirm that the Ninth House project is no longer an ongoing concern there.

This is, in two words, a huge bummer. Ninth House is the first in an adult dark fantasy trilogy, with the second book, Hell Bent, coming out in 2023 and the third book, Dead Beat, out just this year. The series centers around the secret societies at Yale University, though in this world those societies wield magic as well as privilege and power. The novels are fantastic, and I know I’m not the only one who’s bummed we won’t see the story on-screen, at least in the immediate future.

But all hope is not lost. Even though the project is dead at Amazon, that doesn’t mean we won’t see a potential adaptation pop up somewhere else. Here’s hoping that series ends up at another studio and we’ll have another adaptation of Bardugo’s work to enjoy (the first being Netflix’s Shadow and Bone series, which ended too soon). icon-paragraph-end
