Canadian stocks surpassed 33,000 to reach a record high as tech and industrials names rose. The S&P/TSX Composite Index moved 0.3 per cent higher on Thursday to hit 33,014.

The index’s 3.8 per cent year-to-date growth as of Wednesday’s close continues to outpace that of the S&P 500, which increased 1.2 per cent over the same period.

Top performers on the Canadian stocks gauge over the past year were Discovery Silver Corp., which leapt about 830 per cent, and gold exploration company Aris Mining Corp., which jumped by more than 350 per cent. These companies benefited from the surge in gold and silver prices as investors seek haven assets.

Critical minerals company Energy Fuels Inc. was the third-best performer, rising about 290 per cent.
