Trumpet cover of 'A Milli' takes college football by storm, inspires Mississippi St., BYU and Nebraska hype videos

An audacious trumpet solo, played over the beginning of Lil Wayne's 2008 hit 'A Milli,' has taken the college football world by storm as fans gear up for the season.

Herbie Hunkele has been using his trumpet to add a different vibe to popular songs for years. He had already connected with thousands of fans, but not like he did with his July 7 Instagram post.

He titled it "A Milli but Wayne trusted me to start the song for whatever reason." It's fitting that he used that song when considering the exposure -- the post with him playing with the song has more than 1.7 million likes and been reposted more than 337,000 times. It has more than 4 million likes on TikTok.

College football fans were hooked and eventually, programs caught on. Mississippi State was first, posting a hype video with the audio that now has more than 90,000 Instagram likes on July 13. Mississippi State has even invited Hunkele to perform live at its opener September 5 against Louisiana-Monroe.

BYU was next with a hype video featuring the combination. Its July 18 Instagram video has more than 76,000 Instagram likes. 

Nebraska followed on August 1, with a video that has garnered more than 30,000 Instagram likes.

The comments have been as fun as the unexpected musical combination. On the BYU post, Instagram user keonpolee said "This is about to be the official edit for every team." On the Mississippi State Instagram post,_danielvillar said "The number of band directors putting this in the lineup is going to be insane." Many of the comments are multiple fire emojis.

Hunkele also played his trumpet along with Dr. Dre and Tupac's 1995 hit, 'California Love.' UCLA, naturally, used that for its football hype video. 

Judging by the numbers, there may be many more of these collaborations ahead.
