Top international prospect Wandy Asigen, 16, spurs Yankees for Mets’ $3.8 million deal

A top Dominican shortstop will likely soon belong to the Mets.

Wandy Asigen, a 16-year-old prospect, has opted out of his contract with the Yankees, an industry source confirmed Thursday, and agreed to sign with the Mets for $3.8 million.

The international signing period begins on Jan. 15.

Asigen, according to MLB pipeline scouting report, has a “special” left-handed swing and is capable of regularly producing contact that registers 110 mph plus off the bat, in addition to consistently finding the barrel during game action.

Asigen, from Puerto Plata, D.R., is the No. 2 rated international prospect behind 17-year-old Venezuelan shortstop Luis Hernandez.
