Tom Willander blasts Canucks for dismal loss to Sharks

The 2025-26 NHL season just is not for the Vancouver Canucks. They are going to have to rely on the draft in the coming year to get better and make some moves. While everyone expected them to be subpar, the Adam Foote-led squad hit a new low against the San Jose Sharks and Tom Willander just could not contain his words after the game anymore.

Vancouver defenseman goes scorched on earth

The Canucks have now lost nine out of their last 10 games. Their 5-2 loss to the Sharks also marks their 31st defeat of the season. Clearly, this would tick some competitive players off and Willander was one of them. The defenseman did not mince his words after this game, via Kevin Woodley of NHL.com.

"I don't think we played good anywhere today. I think pretty much every detail was bad; can't name anything good today. At least the last few times we had results like this, I think we did a decent job in many parts of our game. But today, I thought, was awful," Willander said.

The Canucks defenseman was clearly trying in this game. Willander got the first goal of the game at the 1:15 mark of the first period. Everything after that? Well, it was not a great sight for any Vancouver sports fan. Adam Foote's schematics and the Canucks on the ice allowed the Sharks to have 33 shots on goal. This led Nikita Tolopilo and Kevin Lankinen to have a 92.6% and 50% save percentage respectively.

Vancouver did have 25 chances at goal but Yaroslav Askarov was just a different type of brick wall in front of the goal. The Canucks goalie ended up with a 92% save percentage by the end of it all. While the Canucks failed to connect to the back of the net, they also hurt themselves quite a lot with a total of six penalties. It did not help that Evander Kane had to be in the penalty box for seven minutes due to roughing and fighting.

While there was some consolation for the Canucks when Filip Hronek scored a goal late in the third period, the game was just far too out of reach at that point. Hopefully, they are able to turn things around just a little bit so that their fans and defenseman would not be livid by the end of games.
