The Detroit Tigers are having a rough 2026 season, and it would be no surprise if they wound up selling by the August 3 trade deadline.
If they do, there will be a ton of attention on a potential Tarik Skubal trade. But, for now, what are the odds that the Tigers will even trade the Cy Young winner?
According to MLB insider Mark Feinsand of MLB.com, the Tigers received a noteworthy 60% trade update on the $32 million ace, with a trade looking very possible for the Tigers even a month-plus out of the deadline.
Tigers have 60% chance of trading Tarik Skubal
"I'd say it's 60-40 he gets traded, but it will depend entirely on how the Tigers play over the next 4-5 weeks," Feinsand writes.
While the Tigers might have a 60% chance of trading Skubal right now, that number could change significantly in the next couple of weeks.
It's a very simple setup. If the Tigers win some more games and climb back into the wide-open AL Wild Card, then the Tigers might end up keeping Skubal.
But if the Tigers collapse a bit and fall even further behind the pack ahead of the August 3 trade deadline, then Skubal is more likely than not going to be traded.
Trading Skubal would sting, but if they're likely to miss the postseason this year, then moving on from the left-hander makes the most sense for the future of the team.

He's more likely than not going to leave in free agency for a new club that offers him the most money, and in a competitive market, the Tigers retaining him doesn't look very likely.
The 34-46 Tigers are 7.5 games out of the AL Central lead, and 5.0 out of the AL Wild Card. They have series against the Houston Astros, New York Yankees, Texas Rangers, Athletics (x2), Philadelphia Phillies, Los Angeles Angels, Chicago Cubs, Kansas City Royals, and Baltimore Orioles between now and the deadline.
A losing record in that stretch, and the Tigers likely sell, and Skubal is a part of that. A trade of Skubal looks more likely if the Tigers lose, but currently, Feinsand predicts a Skubal trade at 60%, which could fluctuate in the coming weeks.
