Tigers make MLB history in the worst way amid recent stretch

Before the MLB All-Star Break, the Detroit Tigers held one of the best records in the MLB. The start of the second half has not gone the way Tigers fans were hoping, as Detroit has lost 12 of its last 13 games. The Tigers' latest loss came on Saturday night, as they fell to the Toronto Blue Jays 6-1, despite an energizing performance from pitcher Tarik Skubal.

It’s hard to believe, but the Tigers are now only ahead of the Cleveland Guardians in first place in the AL Central by seven games with a 60-46 record. A couple of weeks ago, it looked like the Tigers were already locked in as AL Central division champs. Now, if they continue to lose, things could get very interesting if the Guardians continue to put wins together.

Throughout their losing skid, the Tigers have made MLB history in multiple categories. In the last 13 games, the Tigers are the only team in the modern era to be outscored and outhit by 50 or more.

Detroit is also the only MLB team in the modern era to have fewer than 25 extra base hits and to strike out 125 or more times in a 13-game span.

While many Tigers fans have begun to hit the panic button on the season, it's not too late for Detroit to turn it around. With the MLB trade deadline on Thursday, an aggressive trade for the Tigers could help spark the team moving forward.

Outfielder Kerry Carpenter is also expected to return in today’s game against the Blue Jays, which will help the Tigers' hitting struggles. Carpenter has been out since the beginning of July with a hamstring strain.
