The Detroit Tigers have some big decisions to make this offseason. Some notable free agents that Detroit's front office will be thinking about re-signing include Gleyber Torres, Kyle Finnegan, Tommy Kahnle, and likely Jack Flaherty.
The highest-profile guy of that group is three-time All-Star second baseman Gleyber Torres, who just finished his first season with the Tigers. Torres signed a one-year, $15 million deal before the season, and relatively speaking, the deal worked out, but Gleyber had a strong decline in the second half.
Gleyber Torres' potential contract outlook
In a recent predictions piece by The Athletic's Jim Bowden, Gleyber Torres is predicted to receive a four-year, $52 million deal.
"Contract prediction: 4-years, $52 million"
What's interesting is the other teams, aside from the Tigers, that Bowden lists as potential options for Torres. The Chicago White Sox, San Francisco Giants, Los Angeles Angels, and Colorado Rockies could be in the mix.
Torres has 16 home runs this season in 145 games, and was an above-average hitter in terms of OPS+ (108), but his lack of defense may hold him back in contract negotiations.
Detroit should be labeled the favorite to retain Torres, but the Giants might have a big spending mindset this offseason, and Gleyber will likely follow the biggest deal offered to him. He is 28 years old.
