The Detroit Tigers are not having a great 2026 season, sitting at 30-42, in danger of missing the postseason entirely after investing a ton into the roster this past offseason.
But, if there is one solace, it's that a few of their young players are playing great, and it was evident during Monday night's 9-3 win over the Houston Astros, as Colt Keith hit three homers, Kevin McGonigle went yard, and Dillon Dingler played well again.
After that win, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News shared a wild statistic that the Tigers, during Monday's win, with their five homers and 18 strikeouts, became the only team to do so in a nine-inning game in MLB history.
Tigers accomplish HR and SO feat never done before in MLB history
"The golden nugget from the Peter Chase Files (game notes): - The list of teams in MLB history to hit five homers and strikeout 18 times in a nine-inning game: Detroit Tigers, 6-15-2026," McCosky shared.
The Tigers as a team hit five homers, three from Keith, one from the rookie McGonigle, and another from Spencer Torkleson.
They also struck out 18 times: Gleyber Torres, Ha Yu Lee, Dingler, and Keith once; Zack McKinstry, Kerry Carpenter, Jahmai Jones, and Riley Greene two times; and both Torkleson and James Outman three times.
MORE: Tarik Skubal being traded by Tigers would help him in free agency
No other team in MLB history, during a nine-inning game, has ever hit five homers while also striking out 18 times. It's a wild feat that's a perfect encapsulation of the modern MLB.
Players are selling out for power more than ever and are willing to strike out more often to do so. What makes this feat from the Tigers so interesting is that it worked, as they hit five homers, but it also hurt as they struck out 18 times.
The Tigers made 27 outs, only nine of which weren't by way of the strikeout. Of their nine runs scored, only two (one passed ball, one hit-by-pitch) weren't on a home run.
This game from the Tigers, striking out 18 times while hitting five homers, was the first time any team has done that in a nine-inning game in MLB history. It's a wild feat, and shows how feast or famine it was for the Tigers during Monday night's win.
