The Oklahoma City Thunder are trying to figure things out on the fly as they navigate a difficult start to the season due to injuries across the roster. Neither the organization nor anyone else could have anticipated this kind of start.
Chet Holmgren, Jalen Williams and Cason Wallace have all suffered injuries, with Williams and Wallace potentially being season ending.
“The Oklahoma City Thunder lost two starters to long-term injuries in their 108-101 win over the LA Clippers on Sunday night. General manager Sam Presti announced Monday that guard Jalen Williams will undergo surgery for a dislocated left ankle and fractured fibula, while guard Cason Wallace will undergo surgery for a torn labrum in his left shoulder. Both players are expected to miss several months," ESPN wrote.
Less than a week ago, the Thunder added some depth to the roster in response to the injuries, signing former first-round pick Dalen Terry.
“G/F Dalen Terry has agreed on a two-year deal with the Oklahoma City Thunder, sources tell ESPN. Terry enters his fifth NBA season after the former No. overall 18 pick spent time in Chicago and Philadelphia, and went to training camp with Golden State last month,” ESPN’s Shams Charania posted.
However, on Sunday, the Thunder made a trade with the Sacramento Kings to acquire Nique Clifford. To make room on the roster, OKC is reportedly expected to waive Terry less than a week after signing him.
“The Los Angeles Lakers and Denver Nuggets expressed interest in Nique Clifford before the Sacramento Kings traded him to the Oklahoma City Thunder for two seconds, per sources. OKC’s Dalen Terry is on a non-guaranteed deal and can be waived for Clifford to take his 15th spot,” HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto wrote.
The Thunder are making moves to bring in players they believe can help them navigate the loss of three key contributors. It is unfortunate that Terry could be let go so soon after agreeing to a deal, but that is the business side of the NBA.
Clifford has the potential to develop into a quality 3-and-D player. He is versatile and could help the Thunder in several different ways. That versatility is likely what made him an attractive addition for Oklahoma City. As for Terry, he will likely have to start considering his next steps if the Thunder decide to move on.
