The New York Giants parted ways with Brian Daboll on Monday after a 2-8 start to the season. The coach was set to have entered the 2025 season on the hot seat after two underwhelming seasons under his leadership, and his inability to get better results led to his firing.

According to ESPN's Jordan Raanan, the decision to fire Daboll was reached after the Giants' front office concluded that the coach's game management had been poor. The NFL also noted that the risky deployment of rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart in the run game was the straw that broke the camel’s back.

“Coaching can make a difference in close games, and the Giants have already blown four double-digit leads on the road this season,” Raanan reported on Tuesday. “It also gets held against Daboll that Dart was injured under his watch.

“Daboll was insistent on not wanting to take away his young quarterback's aggressiveness. But the reckless nature in which Dart was taking hits ultimately led to this point. The need to avoid this wasn't stressed. Basically, this was the breaking point after blowing another game.”

Dart left the game against the Chicago Bears on Sunday after taking yet another hit while rushing the ball. He’s rushed the ball 57 times this season, which places him among the quarterbacks with the most rushing attempts. While this has been effective for Brian Daboll, it has placed him at significant risk.

The Giants express disappointment with the last few years under Brian Daboll

In the New York Giants’ official statement following the dismissal of Brian Daboll, the team's president and CEO, John Mara, expressed disappointment in the result of the last few seasons. The Giants ended the 2023 season with a 6-11 record and had a 3-14 finish in 2024.

“We spoke this morning about the direction of our franchise on the field, and we have decided that, at this time, it is in our best interest to make a change at the head coaching position," president John Mara and chairman Steve Tisch said in a joint statement. “The past few seasons have been nothing short of disappointing, and we have not met our expectations for this franchise. We understand the frustrations of our fans, and we will work to deliver a significantly improved product.”

Offensive coordinator Mike Kafka will serve as the interim coach until the end of the season after Brian Daboll's departure. It is said that general manager Joe Schoen will lead the team's search for a new coach who can take the team to the next level.
