Karen Silva, who competed on the spinoff series The Voice Kids Brazil, has died after suffering a hemorrhagic stroke. She 17.
The singer's rep announced her death on Instagram April 24. "It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of the young singer Karen Silva, at the age of 17," read the Portuguese-language message, shared on the artist's page, "after days of hospitalization at the São João Batista Hospital in Volta Redonda, as a result of a hemorrhagic stroke."
The condition is caused as a result of bleeding into the brain by the rupture of a blood vessel, per the U.S. National Institutes of Health.
Karen was 12 when she competed on the fifth season of The Voice Kids Brazil in 2020, making it to the top 12.
"Karen enchanted Brazil with her powerful voice and striking presence as a child, when she took part in The Voice Kids in 2020," the Instagram post read. "Since then, she has followed a luminous path, combining talent, charisma and representativeness at every step."
The message continued, "More than just a promising artist, Karen has been a symbol of empowerment, especially for Black girls who have found in her inspiration and the strength to dream. Her music, her message and her joy leave a deep mark on everyone who knew her and followed her journey."
The post concluded, "In this moment of immense grief, we stand in solidarity with her parents, Manoella and Fernando, with friends, family and fans. May the memory of her light continue to guide us."
Four days before Karen's death was announced, her rep said in a statement shared on Instagram that the singer was "facing a health problem and is currently under medical care, with the support and affection of her family and team."
Her fatal stroke came as a shock to her fans and loved ones. Karen's dad said she "didn't have any kind of illness," Brazilian news outlet G1 reported April 25.

The Voice Kids Brazil coach Carlinhos Brown also shared a tribute to Karen, who was part of his team on the series. "This morning, we were all taken by surprise by the sudden departure of Karen Silva," the Brazilian singer wrote on Instagram, "who has been on the stages of The Voice, been part of our teams and will leave extremely important memories for all of us."
He continued, "Karen Silva shone on our show and in life—always with a lot of joy and willingness to learn more about music. Today, with condolences and sympathy for her family, we say goodbye to this powerful person. What we have left is hope in the sacred. We don't know God's designs and how he works on souls. I fully believe that she was chosen to reaffirm in us the desire for victory. May God bless her spirit and put her in a good place."
