Perez Hilton weighed in after rapper Wiz Khalifa was sentenced to prison in Romania over charges related to marijuana possession. In an article published on his website on December 19, Hilton reacted with shock and disbelief to the severity of the punishment, framing the situation as both ironic and surreal given Khalifa’s long-standing association with cannabis culture.

Hilton began by underscoring the contrast between Wiz Khalifa’s public persona and his current legal predicament. He wrote:

“Someone pass the rolling papers because this story is absolutely wild. Wiz Khalifa, Mr. Young, Wild & Free himself, is suddenly not looking very free at all after a Romanian court slapped him with a jaw-dropping nine-month prison sentence over weed. Yes, you read that right. Nine months. For marijuana. In 2025. The universe truly loves irony.”

Hilton then outlined how the case escalated, citing TMZ’s reporting that Khalifa was initially given what appeared to be a relatively minor penalty.

According to Hilton, the punishment first resembled a modest fine connected to the “weed issue,” before Romanian prosecutors moved to pursue harsher consequences. He highlighted how swiftly the situation intensified, shifting from what felt like a minor legal inconvenience to a serious prison sentence.

“On Thursday, the Constanța Court of Appeal sided with them and upgraded the punishment to a full-on prison sentence. That escalated quickly! One minute it’s pocket change, the next it’s lockup abroad. Talk about a buzzkill!” Hilton added.

Finally, the podcaster addressed the response from Wiz Khalifa’s team, noting that the situation was still unfolding and not yet finalized.

“Of course, Wiz’s camp is scrambling to put out this legal fire. Sources say nothing is final yet, and his team is already appealing the decision in hopes of finding an alternative that does not involve their famous client sitting in a Romanian cell,” Perez Hilton wrote.

In the aforementioned article published on his website, Perez Hilton laid out the legal controversy surrounding rapper Wiz Khalifa, tracing the case back to a performance in Romania that ultimately led to criminal charges and a controversial court ruling.

Hilton explained that the incident occurred in July 2024, when Wiz Khalifa headlined the Beach Please! Festival in Costinești.

While performing onstage and dancing to Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg’s The Next Episode, the rapper lit a joint in front of thousands of festivalgoers, a moment Hilton framed as typical behavior for the artist, but one that carried serious consequences outside the United States.

Hilton emphasized that while marijuana use is common and legal in California, the same does not apply in Romania.

“Common in California? Yes! Legal in Romania? Nope! Authorities arrested him shortly after the performance and briefly detained him, setting off a legal chain reaction that has now exploded into this mess,” Hilton wrote.

According to a BBC report published on December 18, Romanian police confirmed that Wiz Khalifa was briefly held and questioned following his July 13, 2024, concert.

Prosecutors later charged him with possession of what Romanian law defines as “risk drugs” for personal use. Investigators said the rapper was found with more than 18 grams of cannabis and had consumed an additional amount onstage during the performance.

The case took a dramatic turn on December 18, 2025, when a Romanian appeals court overturned an earlier fine of 3,600 Romanian lei (£619; $829). Instead of a monetary penalty, the court ruled that Wiz Khalifa must serve his sentence in custody.

In their written decision, judges at the Constanța Court of Appeal explained that they reversed the fine because the artist’s actions were seen as promoting illegal behavior. They argued that his conduct sent a “message of normalisation of illegal conduct” and encouraged drug use among young people.

The court further described the incident as an “ostentatious act,” noting that Wiz Khalifa was a well-known music performer appearing on the stage of a festival popular with youth.

Judges highlighted that he had possessed and consumed an “artisanal cigarette” in front of a large audience that was predominantly very young.

Reacting to the ruling, Hilton said:

“Romania’s drug laws are no joke, and they clearly aren’t impressed by celebrity status or hip-hop culture. While fans online are shaking their heads at how harsh this feels, the reality is that Wiz may be facing an uphill battle. Still, locking up a rapper for nine months over weed feels like something out of a time capsule.”

According to the aforementioned BBC report, Romanian criminologist Vlad Zaha told the BBC that there was little to no chance the United States would extradite Wiz Khalifa to serve the sentence. He also described the punishment as “unusually harsh” given the circumstances.

On the other hand, Wiz Khalifa’s latest collaborative album with Logic, 700 CLUB released on December 4, 2025.
